Q&A
Have a question? We are delighted to provide you with answers to any questions that you may have.
Q:
My lips are super dry and flaky. What can I use to exfoliate my lips and keep them moist? Should I use my body scrub or is that too harsh?
A:
I always stick to my basic rule of using a toothbrush. You can start with putting a warm cloth to the lips for a minute then gently scrub away dead skin with your toothbrush. Follow-up with a good chapstick or vaseline if you're really dry. The use of a body scrub isn't usually meant for your face and most tend to have a lot of oils which may cause break outs.
Q:
I have really curly hair that I like to air dry. What can I do to NOT MAKE IT LOOK FRIZZY?! Help!
A:
When air drying your curly locks, be sure to use a couple of key products. First, find a creme-based curl cream product like Bumble & Bumble's Curl Conscious Cream. This will provide a bit of hold, but more importantly will provide moisture, as curly texture is always thirsty. Second, find a great light-hold gel, such as Aveda's Flax Seed Aloe. This will provide the hold that curly hair needs, yet will remain touchable. Mix the two products together, cocktailing is always good. Work through the hair and begin taking random half inch to an inch sections and begin twisting. Let the hair dry naturally and then use your hand like a rake, lightly raking thru the hair to loosen up the curl pattern. Happy twisting.
Q:
Sorry to admit this, but I've tried coloring my hair with the stuff from 'Walgreens'. Why doesn't it seem to cover my gray hair?
A:
The drugstore color doesn't cover as well as a professional product because the ammonia is way too high to be effective long-term. Your color will, as a result, not take as well to resistant grays. Also, because 'box color' is made for a wide range of buyers, there is no way to customize it or formulate it specifically for one texture or another. We recommend consulting your color professional for the very best advice on how to maintain a gray-free head, as well as keeping the budget in mind (if that is the issue).
Q:
I am growing out my bangs. What's a good styling tip so they don't look awful when growing out?
A:
Cutting the bangs to sweep to the side is a very good way to grow them out. However, the very best thing to do is to talk with your stylist and get some options/opinions. Will bangs look good on you - given your face shape, hair texture, etc...? Talk to the experts to find out the truth.
Q:
I am SUPER pale and I don't plan on getting a tan (artificial or natural), but I still want to try a bronzer. How should I apply it so it looks like a natural tan?
A:
When applying bronzer, a good rule to follow is to think about the way the sun hits your face and start from there. Apply to cheekbones, nose, forehead (use a light hand). You can always apply more if needed and don't forget your neck! You don't want to look like your wearing a mask :) Good luck!
Q:
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE IN TARGET'S BLOWDRYERS AND THE ONES AT YOUR SALON FOR SALE?
A:
When deciding on a blow dryer, remember that quality far out weighs a potential 'good deal' and or 'sale item'. When purchasing a blow dryer at a local retailer, expect a very light weight product that often will not stand the test of time. The materials used in most of these dryers are often poor quality, that being the motor, electrical cord and often the shell itself. A professional dryer, like the SuperSolano (that we retail at RED 7 SALON) is handcrafted, providing a client with amazing workmanship and longevity. The long-life motor in a professional series dryer provides extreme power, multiple heat and speed settings, removable filter and most importantly...a fabulous warranty.
Q:
I've heard the term 'texturizing'. What exactly does texturizing mean?
A:
Texturizing is a professional cutting term - used to remove weight or to soften the harsh lines of a haircut. Texturizing, however, is not right for everyone or every haircut. Consult with your stylist to determine how much texturizing is right for your new look.
Q:
Do you know what I should do/use to strengthen my hair and nails? I've heard it all and just need some advice...
A:
There are several things you can do to strengthen your hair and nails. First and foremost... a healthy diet and exercise is most important. Your hair, skin, and nails are a reflection of what's happening internally. Vitamins containing BIOTIN, hair products containing proteins, and nail strengtheners are also beneficial.
Q:
Is it true that exfoliating helps prevent ingrown hairs?
A:
Exfoliating will help prevent ingrown hairs in some cases. The main reason for most ingrown hairs is due to lack of exfoliating, lack of moisturizing, and believe it or not shaving against the grain of the hair. If you don't disturb the natural direction of hair growth when shaving that will really help prevent the skin from quickly forming an ingrown hair. Exfoliating regularly will help with loosening up ingrowns and working them out of the skin. Moisturizing is always key after exfoliation and will keep skin soft and supple.
Q:
Do color treating shampoos and conditioners really work?
A:
Yes, color treated shampoos and conditioners tend to have a lot of moisture in them. When hair dries out, color molecules are also being sucked out. Having moist and healthy locks help seal color in each strand.
